Help Shape Restoration in the New York/New Jersey Harbor Estuary: Share Your Project Ideas

January 26, 2026

The Federal Natural Resource Trustees for the Diamond Alkali Superfund Site (the Site) —NOAA and the U.S. Department of the Interior—have launched a new project submission portal for community members and partners to suggest restoration ideas. These submissions will help inform a restoration plan describing actions to restore, replace, rehabilitate and/or acquire the equivalent of natural resources potentially harmed by the release of hazardous substances from the Diamond Alkali Superfund Site.

How You Can Help

We’re looking for restoration project ideas in the lower Passaic River, Hackensack River, Newark Bay, Arthur Kill, Kill van Kull, or their watersheds that benefit fish, birds, shellfish, and sediment-dwelling organisms–particularly in areas that are tidally influenced. Examples include:

  • Wetland and salt marsh restoration
  • Enhancing native vegetation and managing invasive species
  • River and streambank restoration and enhancements
  • Water quality or stormwater improvements
  • Culvert replacement or dam removal
  • Shellfish or submerged aquatic vegetation restoration
  • Habitat restoration that supports recreation
  • Land protection tied to coastal habitat benefits

The restoration plan will evaluate potential projects using specific criteria, including, but not limited to: benefits to injured resources, feasibility, and cost-effectiveness, among others. Selected projects will be implemented using funds recovered from the Maxus Energy Corporation Bankruptcy settlement.

Submit Your Project by April 30, 2026

Submitting a restoration project idea is simple:

  1. Visit our Project Submission Web Page
  2. Provide basic project information and one supporting file (up to 20 MB).
  3. Keep your confirmation number for your records.

If you have questions, you may reach out to nmfs.lowerpassaicnewarkbay@noaa.gov.

Your input will help guide the draft restoration plan and promote restoration of the area’s  waterways and habitats.
