Explore 30 Years of Environmental Restoration With NOAAs Updated Case Map

Exploring over 30 years of habitat restoration across the country is now easier than ever with our updated interactive case map. This new tool, created by NOAA’s Damage Assessment, Remediation, and Restoration Program (DARRP), allows users to search and view over 148 nationwide cases and pollution events—including oil spills, hazardous waste/Superfund sites, and ship groundings.
The interactive case map allows users to:
- Explore publicly available environmental incident cases by location and type
- Support coastal resource management, incident awareness, and track case status and progress
- Reference incident summaries and related documentation for environmental response and restoration work
Using the map, users can filter by state, region, or case name. By clicking the incident icons, users can explore specific cases that detail the status of environmental injury assessments and view related restoration activities. Each incident on the map details a summary of the case, up-to-date activity and status, and additional links to explore further related information. In addition, NOAA offers several tools specifically to search, visualize, and download data associated with the evaluation and restoration of environmental injuries from DARRP cases. This work is a collaborative effort. Each case goes through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process, which is driven by law, science, economics, and public input, and led by designated federal, state, and tribal trustee agencies. DARRP works collaboratively to determine the best methods, amounts, and locations for restoration activities with the public’s input. Public engagement is an important part of developing plans to restore coastal resources that strengthen coastal economies.
About DARRP
Since 1992, DARRP has assessed, restored, and protected coastal environments damaged by oil spills, hazardous waste releases, and vessel groundings. Through the NRDA process, its work studies the effects of these incidents on fish, wildlife, surrounding habitats, and public use of those resources. Scientists work together to identify the extent of harm and specify the type and amount of environmental restoration needed to compensate the American public for those losses.
To date, NOAA and partners have recovered $10.8 billion for restoration from those responsible for environmental harm. The funds support restoration of vital estuarine and coastal ecosystems and their services, including wetlands, coral reefs, streams, beaches, recreational fishing, and outdoor recreation. These efforts help safeguard fish, marine mammals, habitats, and wildlife in the long term, accelerate recovery of the environment as well as strengthen local and regional communities and economies nationwide.
